Project Summary

Mental health of young people in the European Union is a major concern. Behind the cold statistics lie young lives destroyed by depression and anxiety. Suicide is now the second leading cause of death among young people in the EU. Our young people are also inheriting a world with problems, from climate change to COVID-19, and have experienced anxiety and psychological problems with serious consequences on their motivation and emotional well-being. Young people are facing feelings of loneliness and social expectations that are difficult for them to meet. Furthermore, adolescents may be particularly vulnerable due to risk factors that can contribute to stress during adolescence, such as the desire for more autonomy, pressure to fit in with peers, exploration of sexual identity, and increased access to and use of technology.

For this reason, HARMONY aims to work collaboratively and with a comprehensive approach across European regions and cities to improve public policies for the mental health of young people, which requires not only medical treatment but a holistic approach with the participation of all community actors.

HARMONY has created a partnership composed of key local, regional, and national actors from the fields of health, youth, and education, with knowledge, experience, and different levels of development related to community-based public policies for the mental health of young people.

With 89% of EU citizens recognizing the importance of promoting mental health, there is an urgent need to address these inequalities and support initiatives for the mental health of young people, confirming the necessity and importance of our project.
